Born in Florence in 1982, Giovanni Ozzola lives and works in the Canary Islands.

He did not study at art school, and began working as a photographer between the 1990s and the noughties.

In his work he focuses on the contrast and balance between the dimensions of light and darkness, a transition that Ozzola has also described in many of his videos; on the epiphany of light as it hits the observer’s body; and on looking in conditions of darkness and semi-darkness.

Ozzola’s photographs, due to their dimensions and the way they relate to the physical presence of the viewer, enter the space as objects. This aspect prompted him quite naturally to begin exploring the possibilities of installation and sculpture, practices which, over time, have led him to investigate a range of materials, such as aluminium, copper, bronze and slate, using them to pursue his inquiries into the sensitive qualities of light and darkness.

His career as an artist began when he took part in the group show Happiness. A Survival Guide For Art And Life, curated by David Elliot and Pier Luigi Tazzi, for the Mori Art Museum of Tokyo in 2001. Since then Ozzola has shown around the world, and his works can be found in many public and private collections, including MART, Rovereto, Italy; Chelsea Art Museum, New York, USA; Sharjah Maraya Art Center, Dubai; Mori Museum, Tokyo, Japan; Schunck-Glaspaleis, Herleen, Netherlands; Künstlerhaus Palais Thurn Und Taxis, Bregenz, Austria; 常青画廊, 圣吉米那诺/Beijing/Le Moulin; Palazzo delle Papesse, Siena, Italy; Man Museo d’Arte, Nuoro, Italy; Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan; Centre d’Art Bastille, Grenoble, France; GC.AC, Monfalcone, Italy; Viafarini Docva, Milan, Italy; Centro Arti Visive Pescheria, Pesaro, Italy; OCAT – Contemporay Art Terminal, Shanghai and Guandong Museum of Art, Guangzhou, China; 2139, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; District Six Museum, Cape Town, South Africa.

He has given workshops and lectures in various institutions: Light and Darkness, CAFA China Central Academy of Fine Arts, 北京, China, Sometimes You Can See Much More, Shanghai Institute of Visual Art, Shanghai, China, Color Constancy, Syracuse University in Florence, Italy, Color Constancy, Syracuse University in Florence.

Ozzola has also participated in various residencies for artists, including at the Institute Bernard Magrez, Bordeaux, France, and the Nirox Trust Fund Foundation, Johannesburg, South Africa. He also takes part in and actively supports the Dynamo Camp Art, Limestre, Italy.
