Michelangelo Pistoletto - Mirror Paintings

- Louvre – (grande bronzo) 2013

For its 5th anniversary, Louvre Abu Dhabi has invited Michelangelo Pistoletto to exhibit a series of mirror paintings inspired by the Musée du Louvre in Paris. After Pistoletto’s exhibition “Year 1, Paradise on Earth” at the Musée du Louvre in 2013, the artist decided to create new mirror works representing both images of the museum’s visitors and those of ancient sculptures, thus creating a direct relationship with the works on display. This series of 11 mirrors is presented within the permanent galleries of Louvre Abu Dhabi, interacting with the collection and creating a dialogue from one Louvre to another.Michelangelo Pistoletto views the Louvre as the mirror of humanity, the reflection of its experiences. Most of Pistoletto’s mirror paintings are constructed around a series of oppositions: between people of the past and those of the present day, between the nude body and the clothed body, and between a body of flesh and one of stone. The mirror paintings enable the superimposition of three times: past (photography), present (reflection in the mirror), future (the photography becomes the memory of a moment that follows all succeeding moments). These exhibited works serve as symbolic images where the Louvre becomes a universal museum, the mirror of humanity, the place where all ages and countries meet.
